How North Atlantic Ocean storms (Hurricanes) are named:
There are 6 lists of names.  Lists make use of names from both sexes. They are in alphabetical order and lists are recycled after six years, although the names of notable hurricanes are retired on request.  All letters of the alphabet are used except Q, U, X, Y and Z.  If the names on a list are all used, storms are then named after the letters of the Greek alphabet (Alpha, Beta, Gamma, etc.)   Greek names, unlike the names in the regular lists, cannot be retired.

Tropical Storm Allison remains the only sub-Hurricane strength tropical cyclone to have its name retired. This is based on the devastating flood and storm surge damage done to the Houston, Texas area when Allison hit in June, 2001. No other Tropical Storm's name (that did not go on to become a hurricane) has ever been retired.

HURRICANE SEASON IS FROM JUNE TO NOVEMBER.  Here is the list of names for 2009 Hurricanes:  Ana, Bill, Claudette, Danny, Erika, Fred, Grace, Henri, Ida, Joaquin, Kate, Larry, Mindy, Nicholas, Odette, Peter, Rose, Sam, Teresa, Victor and Wanda.
